Mauricio Affonso is nearing Mamelodi Sundowns exit as Brazilians overhaul squad

With majority of the African league already ended, clubs have already began their transfer activity ahead of next season- that is around the corner.

Sundowns who enjoyed a mixed season have already announced deals for new players while a couple of old ones could be on the exit including Mauricio Affonso.

The Uruguay International has failed up to live up to expectations since arriving at Sundowns in 2019, owing largely to a spate of injuries.

The 29-year-old has only managed 10 appearances for The Brazilians thus far and only scoring 6 goals since arriving in South Africa with much fanfare.

Another factor against him is the valuable foreign space he occupies, with the club having already brought in Slovakian striker Pavol Safranko.

According to sources close to the DStv Premiership champions, Affonso is on the list of players including Aubrey Ngoma, Phakamani Mahlambi and Tebogo Langerman that will not be part of the squad in the new season.

“Affonso is one of the players who is not part of the coaches’ plans this coming season. The club has already had meetings with individual players regarding their future and some have already been allowed to leave,” says the source.

“The club is still going to make announcements about other new signings as some were involved in the recently completed Cosafa Cup tournament held in Gqeberha.”

The Tshwane giants have already confirmed the signing of Grant Kekana, Neo Maema, Divine Lunga and Thabiso Kutumela.

Despite these incomings, the PSL winners are still in hunt for further signings to be able to bridge the gap on Al Ahly on continental football.

This means big name signings will be demanded but as it stands no house hold names have been revealed by Sundowns.
