Opta global football ranking sees Mamelodi Sundowns the highest ranked African team

Mamelodi Sundowns have remained the highest-ranked club in Africa despite their elimination from the CAF Champions League, while Orlando Pirates have climbed into the seventh CAF spot in the Opta’s global team rankings.

The Opta Power Rankings include nearly 13,500 domestic football teams and provide team ratings across the entire global footballing ecosystem. It allows to compare teams in different countries or continents to inform decisions on a comparable scale.

The Opta Power Rankings rank teams on a scale between zero and 100, where zero is the worst-ranked team in the world and 100 is the best team in the world. The Power Rankings are updated daily and currently rank teams from 183 different countries and 413 unique domestic leagues, providing a truly global rating system in men’s football.

A teams’ rankings is determined by its results in domestic and international tournaments but also the strength of the respective competitions.

In our previous update in April, Wydad were leading the African ranking ahead of Sundowns and Raja Casablanca, but the situation has changed quite a bit since.

Masandawana have climbed into first spot on the continent and 164th globally, while Al Ahly, who were in fourth in April, moved into second and 173rd worldwide.

Wydad, meanwhile, have fallen into third among the CAF giants, despite qualifying for back-to-back CAF Champions League finals.

Pyramids, who were knocked out of the CAF Confederations Cup by Marumo Gallants, are somewhat surprisingly in fourth place, following Moroccan side’s FUS Rabat and FAR Rabat.

Meanwhile, Pirates have moved from 10th position in April into seventh on the continent and from 397th globally to 351.

Petro De Luanda, Raja Casablanca and CR Belouizdad round off Africa’s 10 highest-ranked clubs.
