Chelsea bid for Edouard Mendy from Rennes accepted whiles Kante is staying

Chelsea are close to completing a deal for their Eighth summer signing in Edouard Mendy from French Ligue 1 side Rennes.

Frank Lampard’s side are hoping to land a goalkeeper to compete or serve as a backup the other way round for Kepa Arrizabalaga– whose future at Stamford Bridge remains in doubt.

The Spaniard has not convinced Chelsea’s officials since completing a world record transfer of £71.6million for a shot-stopper from Athletico Bilbao in 2018.

According reports, Chelsea want to keep Kepa for the upcoming season but needs competition from Mendy to put the former Athletico Bilbao on his toe.

Chelsea have being into serious negotiations with the French Ligue side, and according to transfer expert Fabrizio Ramano, a latest bid for Mendy has been accepted.

The goalkeeper is expected to fly to London to complete his Chelsea transfer after pulling out of Rennes’ training yesterday.

Once Mendy is signed, Chelsea will turn their attention to Declan Rice. West Ham insist he will not be sold but the Blues are sure to test their resolve.

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard has given updates on rumours prising N’Golo Kante away from Chelsea this summer.

The French International has recently been linked with former boss Antonio Conte at Inter Milan but Lampard hopes of keeping the 28-year old.

The Blues boss said: “I saw those reports as well. He’s an incredible player and I certainly don’t want to lose him, no.

“He’s fundamental to what I’m trying to do. We can obviously talk about the attacking players we have but someone like N’Golo and the work he does in midfield.

“He looks fit and fresh at the moment so, no, he’s a big deal to me and of course I want to keep N’Golo.”
