Tottenham complete move for Sevilla sensation Bryan Gil as Erik Lamela joins opposite |

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Bryan Gil from Sevilla, with Erik Lamela joining the Spanish club as part of the deal.

Gil, 20, has signed a five-year contract until 2026.

Lamela, 29, departs Tottenham having made 255 appearances in all competitions since signing from Roma for an initial £25.8 million in 2013.

The Athletic understands Spurs have paid Sevilla €25 million (£21.6m) plus Lamela for Gil, who has won three caps for the Spanish national team.

Who is Gil?

An old-school left-footed left winger whose best asset is running at defenders, Gil had a very impressive year on loan at Eibar last season and is currently in Tokyo as part of a strong Spain Olympic squad that also includes Barcelona’s Pedri.

Why did Spurs want to sign him?

Gil is a player that Fabio Paratici, Tottenham’s new managing director of football, has admired for some time.

He is held in extremely high regard in Spain for his fearlessness and directness, and aged 20, is viewed as one of the country’s most exciting young prospects.

New head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, meanwhile, feels that he will add another dimension to the team’s attack.

Why have Spurs allowed Lamela to leave?

Lamela was the last man standing from the seven players Tottenham signed the summer they sold Gareth Bale, but injuries and inconsistent form prevented him from ever becoming a true constant in their starting XI.

As for Lamela, there is a strong Argentinian presence at Sevilla, with compatriots Papu Gomez, Lucas Ocampos (who is represented by the same agency) and Marcos Acuna all in Julen Lopetegui’s squad.

And when Lamela was made aware at the end of last season that Spurs would be willing to let him go, he knew he had to find a new club.
