Asamoah Gyan completes Ghana Premier League return after snubbing Asante Kotoko for Legon Cities

Africa’s World Cup top scorer Asamoah Gyan has completed a return to the Ghana Premier League after snubbing giants Asante Kotoko for Legon Cites transfer deadline day on Saturday.

Gyan’s availability since leaving Indian Super League side NorthEast United has put not only Ghana Premier League clubs on red alert but Premiers Soccer League sides for the 2020/2021 season.

Despite interest from Hearts of Oak, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, it was Asante Kotoko that Gyan was heavily linked with.

The two times CAF Champions League winners failed to meet Gyan’s demands after being faced with financial stress from the coronavirus crisis.

Meanwhile, the degree of impact from the crisis is not the same for Legon Cities- who agreed a deal with the former Sunderland forward on last Friday- a day before close of the local transfer window.

Gyan met with Legon Cities president on Friday as both parties agreed a record $1million deal before the 34-yearl old signed four years contract on Saturday.

Gyan stated that he would play for Kotoko before he retires from football but has one again snubbed the Kumasi based side in a second attempt to play in the Ghana Premier League.

“I’ve supported Kumasi Asante Kotoko since I was a kid, till now. I even said to myself that I had to play Kotoko, but I didn’t have the chance to play before traveling outside” he told TV3.

“I have said that I have to wear the red shirt before I call it a day. I want to finish my career at Kumasi Asante Kotoko”.

In 2003, Gyan who was moved to Liberty senior team netted 10 goals in 16 Ghana Premier League games. And while this was impressive performance in Ghana’s top flight League, Asante Kotoko opened negotiations to sign Gyan but the Black Stars top scorer ended up signing for Seria A side Udinese.

Gyan has scored 51 goals for Black Stars making him the West African country’s top scorer since making his senior debut 17 years ago.

At Udinese, he grabbed 11 goals out of 39 league game between 2003 and 2008 before joining Ligue 1 outfit Rennes in at the beginning of 2008-2009 season. He managed 14 goals in 48 Ligue 1 games and later joined Sunderland in 2010.

Whiles playing in the demanding English Premier League, Gyan scored in 11 of his 36 league games between 2010 and 2012.

Gyan then joined and became a household name in the United Arab Emirates league between 2012 and 2015, finding back of the net 73 times in fewer 65 league games for Al Ain.

He won the United Arab Emirates golden boot three times all in Al Ain colors before leaving for Chinese side Shanghai SIPG.
