Callum Hudson-Odoi agrees to play for Ghana ahead of Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup

The Chelsea star is expected to be part of Ghana’s final squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after reportedly expressing his readiness to play for the Black Stars.

Ghana’s long-term target Callum Hudson-Odoi is weighing up international interest from the West African nation after being chased for a possible allegiance switch.

Hudson-Odoi, who was born to Ghanaian parents in London can officially represent Ghana at the senior level from 17th November, 2022 per the FIFA rules, just seven days before the Black Stars open their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign against Portugal.
Despite having represented England and having earned all three caps in competitive matches, Hudson-Odoi remains eligible to switch nations.
That comes after a FIFA rule change in September 2020 allowed players with no more than three caps to change, if they had earned those appearances before their 21st birthday.
Hudson-Odoi was in Ghana for holidays few months ago where he held a meeting with the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Flagstaff House.
Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo ordered the Sports Ministry and the country’s football association to commence the process of Hudson-Odoi’s nationality switch to play for the four-time Africa Cup of Nations champions.
In August last year, Hudson-Odoi turned down the opportunity to play for England’s under-21 side for internationals against Romania and Kosovo.
And he risked damaging his relationship with the Three Lions further when he turned down a call-up by Gareth Southgate for the matches against Albania and San Marino last November.

Under FIFA rules, players are allowed switch allegiances providing they had played no more than three competitive international games before the age of 21.

This means Hudson-Odoi would be eligible for the changeover just in time to head to Qatar with the World Cup taking place between November 21 and December 18.

Hudson-Odoi has dual nationality through his father Bismark Odoi who was a footballer in Ghana for Hearts of Oak.
