Medeama mutually part company with Frank Boateng amid FA Cup blunder against Hearts of Oak

Medeama SC have mutually parted company with Frank Boateng two days after the former Ash Gold goalkeeper committed a serious blunder in loss to Hearts of Oak in MTN FA Cup semi-finals.

Boateng joined Medeama from Ash Gold in the beginning of last season but he needed to battle with Eric Ofori Antwi for the starting nod. However, Boateng fell behind Antwi in the pegging order leaving him on the bench for most of Ghana Premier League outings.

But he has had considerable minutes in the FA Cup and started in the tough semi-final clash against Hearts of Oak at the Cape Stadium last Sunday.

He was the hero at the opening stage of the game, pulling impressive saves to keep his side in the game but later turned villain after his blunder gave Hearts of Oak a full command of the game.

Benjamin Afutu gave the away side a run-of-play lead in the first half heading home a beautiful cross from Afriyie Barnierh.

Medeama were in hunt for the leveler and their attacks were evidence that they could catch Hearts of Oak on the same page but Boateng’s mistake in the second half handed the Phobians their second goal after coming out for intervention outside the box but failed to clear the ball that eventually left Isaac Mensah in the midst of planting the ball in an empty net.

Frank Boateng conceded a penalty that Afriyie Barnierh scored to hand Hearts 3-0 victory as the burst into MTN FA Cup final for a second consecutive time having been beaten 3-1 by Asante Kotoko in their last final in 2017.

After the game, Medeama were reportedly unhappy with Boateng’s performance in the highly tensed game as management and technical staff held meeting to terminate his 2-year remaining contract. The 27-year old signed with Medeama 3 years from the Miners in October 2020 and has left 10-months into his original deal.

Medeama announced on Twitter, “We have mutually parted ways with goalkeeper Frank Boateng.

“The club would like to thank Frank for his services and wish him well.”

With Medeama emerging as one of the teams with good defensive setup in the ended season, Frank Boateng’s loss would undoubtedly have huge negative impact on them next season.

To worse the problem is after first choice Eric Ofori Antwi has been heavily linked with a move to Hearts of Oak. The league champions are reportedly in negotiations to sign Ofori Antwi but latest reports indicates that Hearts of Oak have pulled out of the deal.

However, that doesn’t guarantee Antwi staying at Medeama as Legon Cities are reportedly closing in on move for the former Ghana U-20 International.

With departing company with Boateng and Ofori Antwi bound to leave within their ranks, Medeama need to find replacements as Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Felix Anann has been linked.

And the former Black Stars short-stopper who has also been linked with Hearts of Oak prefers joining Medeama SC.

Anann’s potential deal may be another impetuous factor for Frank Boateng’s departure amid creating non-competition environment for Felix Anann.
