EXCLUSIVE: Zamalek forward Mostafa Mohamed hands in transfer request in a bid to attempt a move to Glasgow Rangers

Mostafa Mohamed has handed Zamalek a transfer request in a reported effort to force a switch to Ranger in Scotland, after it was claimed Rangers had made a £500,000 offer to land him on loan.

En route to winning the tournament for Egypt, the 22-year-old was top scorer in the U-23 African Cup of Nations in November and has already been capped twice by the senior side.

Mohamed has already netted 12 times this season for the Cairo club including four goals in his last six matches.

Reports in Africa have suggested Rangers offered to pay Zamalek £500,000 for a six month loan for the Zamalek forward and would then buy him for a further £1.5 million if he impressed during his loan spell.

However, Zamalek want at least double for one of Africa’s brightest young talents and won’t entertain the prospect of allowing him to go out on loan first.

That has prompted the player to meet Zamalek director Ismail Youssef and put in an official transfer request as he tried to win a move to Europe.

He said: “Mostafa is an important player for us who still has 18 months left on his contract. We have had a lot of interest from clubs in Europe.

“But we have no requirement to sell the player just now.”

In December it was claimed Steven Gerrard “sent a delegate” to negotiate with Zamalek. That was according to former Feyenoord and Egypt star Haytham Farouk, now a respected pundit in his homeland.

He said: “I know for a fact Mohamed has options in European football most notably from Glasgow Rangers.

“Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has already sent a delegate from his club to speak with him. “They were attracted to him because of his performances in the Under 23s Cup of Nations.”

“I think it would be a great move for him to go to a club like Rangers. It’s important when he does move to European football he takes the right steps with the right club.

“I believe he is one of the exciting talents in African football right now, but until he gets his move, it’s important he focuses on his form at Zamalek.”
