Justice Blay look up to Confederation Cup top scorer Eric Bekoe to build Kotoko legacy

Justice Blay, midfielder for Asante Kotoko, has revealed what motivates him as a player during his fruitful stay in the Garden City of Ghana.

He has insisted his biggest motivation as a Kotoko player staying and winning trophies with the Ghana Premier League giants.

In an interview with Accra based radio station Asempa FM, the Premier League combative midfielder looked up to one of the clubs past famous players, Eric Bekoe- who most Kotoko faithfuls regards as the club’s best player in the past decade and half.

“My biggest motivation right now is not to go abroad. I want to achieve something with Kotoko so when I leave I will be remembered like Eric Bekoe.”

Despite aiming to gain and leave good legacy at Kotoko, he is only under a season long loan deal at the Kumasi based club.

Kotoko have so far been impressed of Blay’s performance and knee signing buying him from parent club Medeama Sporting Club permanently.

And talks between Medeama and Kotoko are ongoing but few differences have drifted the two parties away, but on temporary basis. The two sides are expected to be back on the negotiation table when the season resumes from covid-19 suspension.

The Ghana Premier League is halted without clear date for its return but team-mates Emmanuel Gymafi, Habib Mohammed, Maxwell Baakoh and Blay have already set their sight on winning a continental trophy for the Ghanaian giants who last saw African glory back in 37 years ago when they got the better off Al Ahly over a two legged-game in the 1983 CAF Champions League final.

Kotoko woes in their last best three appearances in CAF Inter Club competitions have al been deepen by North African killers starting from 2006 through 2008 and to 2019.

In 2006, a combination of Club Sportif Sfaxien, Al Ahly and JS Kabylie forced Kotoko to a third position with 7 points in group A of the Champions League, and placed fourth in group B against Etoile Sportive de Sahel, Al-Merrikh and JS Kabylie in the Confederation Cup.

Kotoko forward Eric Bekoe emerged as the best striker in the competition with 10 goals. In 2019, Kotoko’s chances to reach the quarter finals of the Confederation Cup was badly dealt with a home draw against Al Hial from Sudan.
