Asamoah Gyan’s Legon Cities held to 1-1 draw by Berekum Chelsea in Ghana Premier League opener

Legon Cities welcomed Berekum Chelsea to the Accra Sports Stadium for the very opener of 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League season and were held to a 1-1 draw by Berekum Chelsea.

The first game of the season where Aduana would have hosted Hearts of Oak was cancelled due to coronavirus measures.

With the Cities willing to have a brighter start to the new season, Ghana veteran striker Asamoah Gyan missed today’s evening clash.

Both clubs were awarded a penalty each with Stephen Amankona converting the first spot kick to put Chelsea ahead 22′ minutes into the first half after Kofi Owusu was fouled in the box before Jonah Attuguaye converted the second kick to drew Cities on level.

Gyan watched the game from the sidelines as his side and Berekum based side played out a 1-1 draw in the opening game.

“Asamoah Gyan is one experienced player and he’s still got some problems with injury,” Legon Cities head coach Goran Barjaktarevic said ahead of Saturday’s season opener.

We are working to get him fit because it is very important when he comes back, he comes back in good shape.”

While Gyan was not on the pitch on Saturday, he still played a key role for The Royals from the sidelines.

The former Sunderland, Udinese and Rennes striker was captured by television cameras on multiple times hurling out instructions to his teammates from the sidelines.

It is unclear if he will play any part in the club’s next game, an away tie against Great Olympics in what will be a local derby in Accra.
