Ghanaian International Jeremie Frimpong ruled out at Bayer Leverkusen for rest of the season

Bayer Leverkusen have been dealt a huge blow as their impressive right-back Jeremie Frimpong has been ruled for the rest of the season with a serious injury.

The Dutch footballer of Ghanaian descent will return to action after the end of the current campaign because of a syndesmotic ligament tear.

Frimpong suffered the injury while in action for Leverkusen in their 1-0 defeat to FC Koln this past weekend.

After just 13 minutes, Frimpong had to be substituted with Timothy Fosu-Mensah, another Ghanaian who plays for the Netherlands, replacing him.

This comes barely two weeks after he was handed his debut Netherlands call up for the friendly games against Denmark and Germany this month.

Frimpong recently revealed Ghana Football Association (GFA) tried to convince him to play for Black Stars.

He said, “The Ghanaian FA tried to win me over. But I discussed with my family that I want to play for Holland.”

Born in Amsterdam, he moved to England aged seven before teaming up with the Manchester City academy.

Frimpong is finding his feet in Germany following his move from Celtic, with his side currently third in Bundesliga.

He has been linked with Bayern and other top clubs such as Barcelona and Dortmund owing to his impressive displays.

The 21-year-old has one goal in 25 appearances this season.

Jeremie Frimpong rejects Black Stars

In September 2021, Jeremie Frimpong rejected the chances to feature for the Black Stars of Ghana claiming he wants to play for Netherlands.

Bayern Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong has made it clear that he has no plans of playing for the Ghana national team.

The highly-rated right-back insists his dream is to play for the Netherlands since he was born in the European country.

Frimpong was eligible to play for Ghana and the Netherlands, having been born to Ghanaian and Dutch parents.

The 20-year-old is also eligible to play for England after spending his early years in the country when he joined Manchester City.

However, speaking to Dutch publication De Telegraaf, he disclosed that the only country he wants to represent is the Netherlands.

“I was born in the Netherlands, so for me it’s simple: I want to play for Orange (Dutch national team),” Frimpong said.

The defender joined Manchester City at the age of nine and spend almost a decade at the club’s famous academy.

Frimpong moved to Scottish giants Celtic in 2019 before completing a move to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.

He has already represented the Netherlands at U-19 and U-20 level, although he’s yet to make a senior appearance for the Oranje.

Meanwhile, Frimpong is the latest player of Ghanaian descent to turn down the chance to play for the Black Stars after Jeremy Doku and others in recent years.
