Richard Ofori lost Telkom Knockout final after conceding two second half goals against Mamelodi Sundowns

Maritzburg United pull a surprise in the semifinals of the Telkom Knockout, beating giants Kaizer Chiefs 1-2 to appear in the Saturday’s final against Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Ofori who was rested in Maritzburg’s last league game ahead of the final hoped to guiding his side to their first silverware on Saturday evening but the powerful line of Mauricio Affonso and Gaston Sirino proved too bad for Ofori to lift his first trophy of the season.

After a tight game inside the first thirty minutes, Judas Mosemaedi broke the deadlock for Maritzburg nine minutes later. However, Sirino assist found Mauricio Affonso to equalize for Downs nine minute after restart before Affonso again put Downs ahead for the first time in the game on the 74’ minute.

Ofori came out from his posts to save Sirino’s cross from the left flank but Affonso was the quickest to raise above the Ghanaian keeper and his defenders as Affonso head home in an empty net.

There was little Ofori’s side Maritzburg could do as they saw Downs lifted Telkom Knockout and their first title of the season after coming back from a goal down to win 2-1 on Saturday evening.
