Hearts of Oak eliminated from Caf Confederation Cup as fans attack club officials
Hearts of Oak failed to overturn their 3-0 defeat against AS Real Bamako of Mali in the Caf Confederation Cup second preliminary round first leg.
After the second leg game in Ghana, Hearts of Oak fans held hostage of two club officials Vincent Sowah Odotei and Alhaji Moro popularly known as Alhaji Akanbi after Hearts’ exit from the African Confederation Cup on Sunday. Sowah Odotei and Akanbi are said to behind the masterplan that led to the firing of former boss Samuel Boadu.
The two officials were been chased and held hostage by uncontrolled angry fans at the Accra Sports Stadium as the police came into the scene to place the two officials under tight security protection. The livid fans also flattened the car tyre of the embattled club officials.
The Ghana Premier League side won the second leg of the tie 1-0 in Accra Sunday but still fell behind by two-goal deficit after suffering 3-0 in the first leg at Bamako last week Sunday.
Hearts dominated the game but waited until last 10 minutes to find the opener after Caleb Amankwa struck a volley on the 89′ minute. Hearts piled the pressure to close the score line gap but failed within proceeding.
Hearts fans were unhappy with the score line though but what caused rise tension was the way Hearts played with fans believing the team’s overall play has dropped since the departure of former boss Samuel Boadu.
Although Hearts’ results under Samuel Boadu wasn’t good but the boss gave sense of hope in the future with the way his team played, at least, affording draw in two difficult Ghana Premier League games against Great Olympics and Asante Kotoko.
Boadu was fired prior to the first leg game against AS Real Bamako as David Ocloo who was appointed the assistant coach leading Hearts of Oak in the 3-0 defeat in Mali.
The assistant coach who acts as the interim boss for the African campaign has not impressed with Hearts fans chanting for the return of Samuel Boadu who was seen at the touchline and waving fans during warm-up session in Sunday’s slim win over AS Real Bamako.
Boadu was then carried on shoulders of fans around Accra Sports Stadium after the game and raises concern that the former Medeama Sporting Club coach who won five titles during his 18-months period in his first Hearts spell could be returning to the Phobians.
