Nigeria stuns Chile 2-1 in last group game in FIFA U17 Women World Cup

Nigeria have progressed to the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World in India after 2-1 beating of Chile in Group A last game.

The West African giants, one of the three African sides to appear in the 2022 World Cup after Tanzania and Morocco, lost 2-1 against Germany in opening day game before claiming a 4-0 victory over New Zealand in their second game. A draw against Chile would have sent them through to the quarterfinals but beat the South America side 2-1 Monday morning at the Kalinga Stadium.

Nigeria took an early lead after Blessing Ngozi Emmanuel scored from a shot just outside the box when it was 4′ minutes on the clock. Chile who dominated the game after 90′ minutes failed to defend well from a Nigerian thrown-in, handing the African a big advantage to capitalized on.

Swift Nigeria should have doubled the tally within the interval as they hit the crossbar on the 74′ minute but still haven’t put the game beyond Chile. Another stunning distance strike 5 minutes later saw Chile goal-keeper pushed to corner.

Mosaku doubled the lead from a close range 8 minutes to full time before Chile pulled one back in stoppage time. Chile had failed to defend their lines from set-piece at the right flank.

The VAR awarded Chile a penalty on a hand ball incident in last-time. Tali Sami Rovner Yudelevich converted for the South American side on 90+1.
