Asante Kotoko striker Mbella Etouga fails to equal Ishmael Addo’s Ghana Premier League record

Franck Mbella Etouga fell short of matching Ishmael Addo’s 22 goals in a single Ghana Premier League season after the Asante Kotoko striker failed to score in his last game of the season.

The Hearts of Oak legend set the record with his blistering form in 2002, earning him a third straight golden boot trophy.

The Cameroonian forward was expected to equal the record and possibly break it on Saturday but drew blank in the 1-1 draw against Accra Lions.

Etouga finishes the season with 21 goals, but still leads the race to win the golden boot.

AshantiGold attacker Yaw Annor has 20 goals and can overtake Etouga when the Miners play Bibiani Gold Stars on Sunday.

Mbella’s agent, Amadou Fontem Tigana, has revealed several clubs have contacted him about the striker.

“Because of Etouga I have got more than 5000 calls,” he told Accra-based Happy FM.

“I have been managing top Cameroonian players like Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu of Young Boys. So, I am not after the money but because of Etouga, the connection I have is more than the other players I am even managing.

“I had a contract for him at South Africa but I preferred he went to Ghana. Asante Kotoko platform is very big. I sent him here with the notion that he will not last more than two years,” he added.

Etouga linked with PSL side Kaizer Chiefs

South African side Kaizer Chiefs have shown interest in signing Ghana Premier League top scorer Mella Etouga ahead of next season. The Cameroonian International netted his 21st goal of the season against Great Olympics last Sunday and is chasing Ghana Premier League all time record.

The PSL giants may enter into competition with major European sides with Stade Rennais, Metz, Atletico Madrid and Fenerbahçe interested in landing the goal poacher this summer.

Chiefs have reportedly registered their interest in Etouga who has been a revelation in the Ghanaian Premier League this season, but Makaab refused to reveal the identity of the African striker.

“A lot of the Chiefs supporters have spoken to me about the West African striker, I can tell you that I’m not only in the process of offering a West African striker but also another African striker to Kaizer Chiefs,” Makaab said on iDiski Times.

“I’ve opened discussions with Chiefs on both that player and a player at Swallows and a player that’s in Portugal that we’ve all spoken about, so as we talk now there are three players I’m discussing with management of Chiefs.

The experienced agent has been busy recommending players to Chiefs as the Naturena-based giants continue to rebuild their squad under their new coach Arthur Zwane.

“We have to hope that we can get at least one or two of those deals that can assist Chiefs if they believe these players can help them in their rebuilding process,” he continued.

“One at Swallows one at Braga and one currently one of the top scorers in the continent based in Africa. But again, I don’t hold the cheque book, the transfer rights are held by Swallows, Braga and the club in Africa.”

Kaizer Chiefs could buy Mella for a round 1.5M Dollars but their negotiation skills could be essential in having a reduced deal.
