The 20-year-old is willing to sign a new and improved contract with the Bilbao club, and the club is working to finalize a deal as soon as possible in order to deter other clubs from pursuing the attacker.

The Spain international, whose senior brother Inaki Williams plays for Ghana, has had a decent season, scoring two goals and one assist in the Spanish top flight so far.

He was on target when Bilbao defeated Rayo Vallecano 3-2 in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday. The victory sees Bilbao occupy European football position, 4th with 13 points after 6 games.

Despite being a subject of interest for several clubs including Liverpool and Manchester United, Jon Uriarte believes Nico Williams loves the Bilbao and is well tied at the club.

“I think we have to go step by step, he is still a very young player and he has a long way to go, so we are happy with his call but with our feet on the ground,” Uriarte said.

“His call-up to the national team is very good news. For us, it is a sign that Lezama is doing a great job because we don’t stop producing talent, not only with Nico but also with many other players that we have in the first team and in the lower categories.”

“At the moment I want to think about the good and I don’t want any worries of that kind.”

“Everything is well tied, on top of that he loves Athletic and wants to stay in our team for many years and we also want him to stay.”

The youngster has been handed call up into the Spanish national team ahead of the Nations League games against Switzerland and Portugal.

Jon Uriarte was voted as Bilbao president in June 2022 driving the Laliga side to the right direction.

Casting his vote on the election day, he declared: “This is special day and it has finally arrived. We’re very happy. We’ve had intense weeks of hard work. We were really looking forward to this day and can’t wait to see the results.

“I encourage you to vote, Athletic needs you to do so. On election day is when you have to take a step forward.

“I trust that the general public will come to San Mames and vote. We are looking forward to seeing the results.”
