Al Ahly beat RB Berkane 2-0 to lift Caf Super Cup in seven years as Reds extend record to overall 7 titles
Al Ahly faced another test from last season’s Caf Confederation Cup winner RB Berkane in the African Super Cup but the Egyptian giants overcame the test after a comfortable 2-0 victory on Friday evening.
Al Ahly emerged as champions of the Caf Champions League last season after beating their country counter Zamalek 2-1 in the finals at Cairo last November while Berkane pip Pyramids 1-0 to lift the Confederations Cup last in Morocco.
Continuing on continental football following their 1-1 draw against Sundowns in second leg of the Champions League quarter finals staged Al Ahly in battle for the Super Cup against the Confederation Cup champions at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
The two North African sides ended the first half with each failing to score despite some good chances to coming the way of both clubs but Al Ahly were the better side.
Mosimane’s side took second half early lead when Mohamed Sherif turned his marker from inside before firing, with his left foot, a powerful placement to the far post with Zouheir Laaroubi appearing helpless in the goal posts.
There was nothing Berkane could do to prevent that goal where the most credit must go to Sherif who showed first class quality both off and on the ball, leapfrogging the entire Berkane defense as he shot quickly before the defense would react to siege against his effort.
It appears no wonder the 25-year old has become an integral member under tactical Pitso Mosimane. Berkane tried finding the equalizer but only saw Al Ahly extend their lead in stoppage time when Salah Mohsen was sent through on goals. Salah kept his composure, dribbled Laaroubi to a tight angle on the right before scoring from a close range when it was 8’ minutes to full time.
This victory hands Pitso Mosimane his first Caf Super Cup title but it’s Al Ahly’s first title since 2014 and overall 7th title in the history of the African Super Cup.
Today’s Al Ahly win together with Zamalek’s 4 titles makes Egypt the country to see the Caf Super Cup on most times, 11 in total. Followed by Morocco (4 titles) as Dr Congo and Tunisia have lifted it 3 times each.
