Ghanaian International Edmund Addo shines in Sherif Champions League 1-2 win over Real Madrid

A shocking of a results in the Champions League when Sheriff Tiraspol traveled to face competition history makers Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in Tuesday night football. They beat Real Madrid 2-1 in Spain.

Done on a stoppage time, the Moldovan side cruise into the lead mid-way when Jasurbek Yakhshiboev announced Sheriff’s presence at Bernabeu Stadium on the 25’ minute.

A man who played important part in Sheriff’s surprise Champions League group stage victory is Edmund Addo who the Ghanaian battled well in the Sheriff’s midfield.

One of his challenges saw him fouled Federico Valverd late in the first half as the Ghanaian International was booked.

He maintained his position from Sheriff’s first Champions League group stage victory against Shakhtar Donetsk where they won 2-0 at home.

The Ghanaian ace started in a two pivot with Sébastien Thill in front of Sheriff’s backline of Costanza Fernando, Danilo Arboleda, Gustavo Dulanto and Cristiano da Silva.

Addo and his co-partner shielded the Sheriff defense that piled  heavy load on Madrid’s attack. The Spanish side struggled to play direct through the middle. Their wingers Hazard and Vinicius Jr. also struggled on the other flip.

After Sheriff’s goal, Real Madrid dominated especially in the midfield forcing the away side to sit deep in their won half.

And that potentially handed Madrid advantage as they began to enter their opponents box frequently. It was evident that the LaLiga side would draw parity after a potential penalty check; after Vinicius Jr was brought down into the box in the second half; was overlooked.

Few minutes later, Eden Hazard’s strike to the bottom right corner was saved. Vinicius who consistently created problems for Sheriff won a penalty after his penetration between Addo and Costanza Fernando was blocked by the later.

Karim Benzema converted the spot to drew Madrid on level. The Ghanaian International continued to add more energy to his partner Thill as the former provided the shield while Thill pushes forward for a goal.

In stoppage time, that worked perfectly well. Having pushed forward, Thill receives a pass from Malian attacker Adama Traoré; the Luxembourg ace sent in a half-volley into the net as Sheriff restore their lead on 89′ minute.

The Ghanaian International completed the entire game as he marks his second Champions League debut. Malian Adam Traoré also finished the game at Madrid.
