Johnson Smith on Medeama draw while Asante Kotoko goalscoring problem given special attention

Asante Kotoko have had their goalscoring problem given special attention as the season gets tougher.

The Ghana Premier League outfit have failed to score more than a goal in a single game and in total they have managed to find back of the next only 6 times, fewer than the number of games played in the season so far, 8.

Kotoko have scored a goal each against Legon Cities, Eleven Wonders, Dreams FC, Berekum Chelsea, Nouadhibou FC and Medeama and failed to net in clashes with Great Olympics and Al Hilal in the Total Caf Champions League that makes the second leg tie in Omdurman a tough one.

And most results happened under the guidance of Maxwell Konadu who was fired 10 days ago after Great Olympics shocked Kotoko with a 1-0 defeat in outstanding Ghana Premier League in the Accra Sports Stadium.

The same goalscoring problem seems to exit under Johson Smith who now acts as the interim boss, though he has so far defeated Dreams FC, lost to only Al Hilal that most described as bigger side and nearly went away with a victory against Medeama SC last Sunday.

Thanks to Kwame Opoku who latched onto Emmanuel Gyamfi’s through ball to give Kotoko a lead in the second half but a late penalty from Abass Mohammed denied the Porcupine Warriors all three points.

Smith has now admitted Kotoko goal-scoring problems after Medeama 1-1 draw and has vowed to fix the problem in remaining games.

“We accept that we drew, but we were affected by the goal that was disallowed, what saddens me is the penalty.”

“It means we would have lost if we had not scored first. In football, anything can happen that’s why I always tell the boys to score more goals and not just score one goal and depend on it.

“We are going to work on our inability to score goals,” he said after their 1-1 draw game with Medeama.

The Ghana Premier League is on break which means Kotoko’s next game come on 3rd January 2021 when they make a trip to face Ebusua Dwarfs at the Cape Coast Stadium before heading to Sudan against Al Hilal in the Caf Champions League.

Smith, former player of Kotoko and manager of Karela United has also given Kotoko fans hope ahead of Champions League clash with the Sudanese side. “Yes really [We can overturn the first leg results] because they came here and they scored us one.

You saw how the goal came. The same thing could happen there (in Omdurman) because we are all playing 11 v 11. So it may happen,” Coach Johnson Smith said in a post-match interview after the draw against Medeama SC on Sunday.
