Match Report: FC Nouadhibou 1-1 Asante Kotoko CAF Champions League preliminary round first leg

Asante Kotoko stretched Nouadhibou FC to a 1-1 draw in the preliminary round of the Caf Champions League. Despite the good display in today’s clash, Kotoko have still not recorded victory in any competitive game, drawing all of their three games so far.

They had already drew against Eleven Wonders and Berekum Chelsea in the Ghana Premier League before facing the Mauritanian side in African Champions League on Sunday.

Nouadhibou welcomed the Ghana Premier League outfit to Stade Stade Cheikha Ould Boïdiya in Nouakchott in first round of the Champions League but were forced to share the spoils.

Having failed to reach any group stages of the competition in almost 14 years, the Ghanaian club prepared very well for this season, bringing in experience players from abroad where the likes of former Ghana U-2O left-back Patrick Asmah, Black Stars shot-stopper Razak Abelora, Muniru Sulley- Jr. brother of former Inter and AC Milan start Sulley Muntari and Brazilian play-maker Fabio Gama were signed for the Champions League.

The signings paid off in their first Champions League of the season as the Ghanaians avoided defeat in what appears a good first leg results for the Porcupine Warriors against their rivals from Mauritania.

Osman Ibrahim gave Kotoko an early lead but Nouadhibou fought back to leveled before the end of the first half. Despite appearing the dominant side in the first half,  they failed to add another after the home side’s equalizer.

Ibrahim got his first goal of the season for Kotoko and that came in the Champions League but his goal was cancelled out by Hemeya Tanji’s penalty kick.

Kotoko will host Nouadhibou in Accra a week later to see who face Al Hilal or Vipers from Uganda. Hilal won the first leg 1-0 thanks to Waleed Bakhet strike that offer the Sudanese side an advantage ahead of the second leg in Omdurman.
