Dutch-born Leeroy Owusu handed debut Ghana call-up for Nigeria World Cup playoff game
The hugely talented right-back has been handed a debut call-up to the senior national team of Ghana for the all-important FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria later this month.
Ghana coach Otto Addo has included Dutch-born of Ghanaian descent Leeroy Owusu in his squad list for the 2022 FIFA World Cup final play-off game against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The 25-year-old full-back has been handed an invitation to the Black Stars for the first time following his exploits in the Dutch Eredivisie with Willem II.
According to Kickgh, the Black Stars technical team led by Otto Addo have been monitoring the former Ajax Amsterdam star in the last five games of Willem II in the Dutch top-flight league, which he has managed to enjoyed full duration with scintillating performances.
However, the Black Stars technical team were convinced with his output to include Leeroy Owusu in Ghana’s squad list for Nigeria showdown as replacement for Philemon Baffour, who has struggled to break into the team.
Owusu, who has made 23 appearances for Willem in the Dutch Eredivisie, is currently ranked among the best full-backs in Holland.
He was born to Ghanaian parents in Holland which makes him eligible to represent Ghana at the senior level despite featuring for Holland U17, U18, U19 and U20 sides.
It is understood that the Ghana Football Association has finalized his nationality switch to play for Ghana against Nigeria in the FIFA World Cup final play-off round later this month.
Otto Addo has dropped seven players who were members of Ghana’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations team.

Dutch born Ghanaian defender Leeroy Owusu has joined Dutch Eredivisie side Willem II on June 2020 after completing his medicals on Friday.
Owusu, then 23, joined the club on a three year deal after ending his stay with De Graafschap.
The former Ajax Academy graduate and Excelsior man was in fine form for De Graafschap before the season was cancelled in the 2019-2020 season due to coronavirus pandemic, scoring three (3) and providing five assists in 29 appearances.
The marauding right-back was on top form for De Graafschap making 29 league appearances, scoring thrice and providing five assists.
De Graafschap started negotiations with Julian Lelieveld who plays for Vitesse Arnheim as Leeroy’s replacement.
It was understood that Willem II were paying 500,000 Euros for the services of Owusu.
