Milovan Rajevac reveals reason behind Ghana Afcon preparations friendly against African champions Algeria

Ghana open their Afcon Cameroon 2021 campaign against North African side Morocco early next month. Ghana will be hoping to begin their journey with a victory but that will not come easy once playing against one of the tournament favorites Morocco.

The Moroccans have recently had the better of Ghana after beating the Black Stars 1-0 in an International friendly at the FAR Sportive stadium in Rabat. Thanks to Chelsea superstar Hakim Ziyech who climbed off the bench to incur a stunning assist from the right flank for Jawad El-Yamiq to score in the second half.

Ghana may want a sweet revenge in Cameroon but adequate preparations could be key as the West African side have lineup a friendly clash against African champions Algeria.

Ghana boss Milovan Rajevac says playing a friendly against Algeria will give the Black Stars an idea of how to confront North African side Morocco in the opening game of Group C at the AFCON 2021.

The Serbian trainer confirmed the Black Stars will play Algeria in a friendly in Qatar before traveling to Cameroon for the Nations Cup.

Milovan Rajevac released his 30-man provisional for the tournament on Tuesday at a press conference in Accra and while speaking to Citi FM, he explained the reason for the friendly.

“The reason is very simple, we play against Morocco in the first game, and we need to play a team that has a similar approach to football,” he said.

“Before the World Cup in 2010, we played against Bosnia because we had a game against Serbia and so it is the same reason for choosing Algeria. We need to familiarise ourselves with such teams. Also, because I have coached there before, I know the team very well,” added the Serbian trainer.

The Black Stars open their Nations Cup campaign against the Atlas Lions on January 10, 2021.

The Algeria game will be a good one for Ghana who are chasing their first Afcon glory since 1982. Algeria will defend their Afcon title and walk into Ghana’s friendly game having celebrated another continental trophy after beating Tunisia last weekend to win the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar.
