Firefighters are struggling to reach the power plant because they face “heavy weapons fire” from Russian troops, with Ukraine’s foreign minister warning: “If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl.”

Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant has been shelled by Russian forces in Ukraine – with a fire breaking out.

The attack on the northeastern city of Energodar and its Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant unfolded as the invasion entered its second week.

Local politicians initially said that firefighters were unable to get close to the scene because they were being shot at – but a team of 40 people and 10 units have now extinguished the blaze which was at a training building.

Ukrainian officials have said there is a “real threat of nuclear danger”, with foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba warning: “If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency has said that the fire has not affected essential equipment or caused radiation levels to change.

US officials have also stressed that reactors at Zaporizhzhia power station are protected by robust containment measures, and are now being safely shut down.

A video on the plant’s YouTube channel appears to show large explosions at the power station.

Nuclear power plant ‘captured by Russians’ – Ukraine officials

Ukraine’s nuclear regulator is reporting the plant has been “captured by military forces of the Russian Federation”.

In a statement on Facebook, the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation also said information on deaths and injuries remains unclear.

“Systems and elements, important for the safety of the nuclear power plant, are in working condition,” the SINR said.

“Changes in the radiation state for the current time have not been recorded.”

Zelenskyy calls for Europe to take action in overnight video

Ukraine’s president gave an emotional speech overnight in which he warned an explosion at the nuclear power plant could spark “the evacuation of Europe”.

Mr Zelenskyy added: “Only urgent action by Europe can stop the Russian troops. Do not allow the death of Europe from a catastrophe at a nuclear power station.”

Energy experts have said there is nothing to indicate an impending disaster, with the American Nuclear Society saying: “The real threat to Ukrainian lives continues to be the violent invasion and bombing of their country.”

Jon B. Wolfsthal, a former special adviser to Joe Biden when he was vice president, added: “Everyone needs to take a step back and not jump to conclusions.”

Nonetheless, the assault has triggered late-night phone calls between Mr Zelenskyy and Western leaders – with the US Energy Department activating its nuclear response team as a precaution.

Sky correspondent Greg Milam said: “Experts themselves say the reactors themselves should be able to withstand most things in terms of aircraft hitting it, they are designed to withstand an awful lot of impact.

“But the fuel that is there is the real concern and the idea of a leak of any radiation is a real concern.”

UK and US receive update from Ukraine’s president

Boris Johnson spoke with Mr Zelenskyy after news broke about the fire – with a Downing Street spokeswoman describing the situation as “gravely concerning”.

She added: “Both leaders agreed that Russia must immediately cease its attack on the power station and allow unfettered access for emergency services to the plant.

“The prime minister said the reckless actions of President Putin could now directly threaten the safety of all of Europe. He said the UK would do everything it could to ensure the situation did not deteriorate further.”

Mr Johnson plans to seek an emergency UN Security Council meeting within hours – and No 10 said the UK “would raise this issue immediately” with Moscow.

Ukraine’s president has also spoken to his American counterpart early this morning – with Mr Biden receiving a separate update from the US Energy Department’s under secretary for nuclear security.
