Turkey announce 3-month emergency as death toll soares across 5,000

Death toll from Turkey and Syria earthquake has increase more tham 5,000 while some 4,700 buildings have been confirmed to have collapsed following the 7.8 tremour on Monday.

The devastating occurrence have since put rescuers and life saving agencies at work though the number of suvivors have not yet been confirmed.

As rescuing operations continue to save more lives, Turkey has declared a state of national emergency for the next three months.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced a three-month state of emergency across the 10 provinces worst affected by Monday’s devastating earthquakes.

Erdogan said the death toll from the earthquakes centred in southeastern Turkey rose to 3,549, bringing the total number of killed, including those in northern Syria, to more than 5,000.

The initial magnitude 7.8 tremor, centred about 33km (20 miles) from the city of Gaziantep, brought down buildings as people slept and was followed by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake hours later amid several aftershocks.

Dozens of countries from around the world have promised help in search and rescue operations that are being hampered by cold and snow.
