King Charles III to address the nation for the first time at 6pm UK time
The first address to the nation by its new King, Charles III, will be broadcast at 6pm on Friday, it has been confirmed.
The late Queen’s eldest son is flying back to London from Aberdeen, having travelled to Balmoral to be with the 96-year-old in her final hours.
It’s believed the address will have been pre-recorded earlier on Friday before being shown on BBC One, BBC News, Sky News and ITV1.
The 6pm slot follows a jam-packed schedule leaving Charles scarce time for private mourning.
The 73-year-old will also hold his first audience as monarch with new prime minister Liz Truss.
Charles is expected to use his address to pay tribute to the Queen, both as a monarch and mother, and pledge his duty as her successor.
Royal experts believe he will echo a famous address broadcast from South Africa on her 21st birthday in 1947, five years before she took the throne.
At the time she said: ‘I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.’
In a statement released upon the announcement of the Queen’s death on Thursday, Charles said: ‘The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.
‘We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother.’
The address forms part of a detailed royal protocol enacted after the Queen’s death, which also includes two simultaneous 96-gun salutes in London’s Hyde Park and Tower Bridge.
Audio of his speech is likely to be played at a public service of prayer and reflection in St Paul’s Cathedral in London, which gets underway simultaneously.
