The Australian government announced sanctions Friday targeting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko — a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin — and members of Lukashenko’s family, while accusing the Belarusian government of providing support in the invasion of Ukraine.

The government also imposed sanctions on 22 Russian “propagandists and disinformation operatives,” including senior editors at Russia Today, the Strategic Culture Foundation and InfoRos, Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said in a statement.

Australia has imposed sanctions on 32 pro-Kremlin propagandists so far. Payne explained that disinformation has been important in Russia’s attempts to legitimize its invasion of Ukraine.

Lukashenko’s son, Viktor, and wife, Galina, were added alongside the Belarusian president to a sanctions list of 13 other Belarusian individuals and entities that helped Russia launch attacks from Belarus, north of Ukraine. Russian troops were deployed to Belarus and trained there in January, The Post reported. During the invasion, some Russian forces crossed into Ukraine from Belarus.

Belarus “has allowed Russia to fire ballistic missiles from Belarus into Ukraine, enabled the transport of Russian military personnel, heavy weapons and tanks into Ukraine, provided refueling points in Belarus for Russian military aircraft and stored Russian weapons and military equipment,” Payne said in the statement.

Mariupol Drama Theater bombing

Two new videos, posted to Telegram and verified by The Washington Post, show the Mariupol Drama Theater after it was hit by a Russian airstrike. More than 1,000 people were sheltering inside the theater when it was hit March 16.

The first video shows many people covered in dust at the base of a staircase, with more people coming from the level above. Debris is scattered on the steps. The second video shows the theater’s auditorium reduced to rubble, the space now almost unrecognizable except for some patterning on a wall.

“There may be a lot of people under the rubble,” says the man filming.
