The helicopter was travelling in a convoy with another helicopter over the area, which is 60km north of the Victorian capital, when it disappeared just after 9.30am on Thursday.

The police air wing located the wreckage near Blair’s Hut in an area of dense bushland about 11.45am.

The pilot and four passengers died in the crash, police confirmed on Thursday night.

Three of the victims were from Victoria – a 50-year-old woman, a 73-year-old man and a 32-year-old man – and two were from New South Wales – a 59-year-old man and 70-year-old man.

Police said the chartered helicopter took off from Moorabbin Airport before picking up passengers in Batman Park, Melbourne about 7am.

The flight was destined for Ulupna, in northern Victoria.

The exact cause of the crash is not yet known.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it would investigate the incident and is sending a team to inspect the wreckage.

The ATSB will also analyse any recorded data and conduct interviews with those who have knowledge of the flight.

A preliminary report from the watchdog is expected in about six to eight weeks.

The operator of the helicopters, Microflite, said the company would cooperate with investigations into the cause of the crash.

“I extend my deepest condolences to all affected by this incident who we are supporting through this very difficult time,” executive general manager Rod Higgins said in a statement.

The second helicopter, also believed to have been carrying four passengers and a pilot, landed at Moorabbin Airport in Melbourne’s southeast about 2pm.

Mount Disappointment is on the the southern end of the Great Dividing Range. The 800 metre peak was named by explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824, who were disappointed that the dense tree growth prevented them from being able to see Port Phillip Bay from the summit.

In 1944, two Royal Australian Air Force dive bombers crashed into the side of the mountain which was obscured by a low-hanging cloud, killing five people. Two more RAAF members died in a crash on the mountain in 1942 and another in 1953.
