Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif urges Black Princesses to make impact at U20 Women’s World Cup

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has urged the Black Princesses of Ghana to make an impact at the 2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

Ghana’s Black Princesses are in Group D alongside Japan, Netherlands and USA.

Mustapha Ussif visited the team at Accra Sports Stadium during one of their training sessions to engage the players this week.

Speaking to the team after the exercise, Mustapha Ussif urged the players to have the mindset that they are going to try to win the trophy at the tournament.

“We are not yet going to Costa Rica to represent but to make an impact by at least qualifying from the group stage to the next round and if possible, win the trophy,” the Sports Minister told the team.

He added, “I have no doubt at all after watching you play this evening and I can tell you are poised for action and you are going to do well in Costa Rica.

The tournament will kick off on August 10 and end on August 28, 2022. With less than a month to go, Ghana have intensify its preparations toward the competition.

They began the tournament with a tough clash against USA on 11th August before the face Japan in the next game on 14th and Netherlands last on 17th.

Ghana and Nigeria are the African countries to represent the continent. Ghana have made 6 appearances while Nigeria have 10 appearances to their name.

2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup

The 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (Spanish: Copa Mundial Femenina Sub-20 de la FIFA Costa Rica 2022) is scheduled to be the 10th edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, the biennial international women’s youth football championship contested by the under-20 national teams of the member associations of FIFA, since its inception in 2002 as the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship (the age limit was raised from 19 to 20 in 2008).

The tournament will be hosted by Costa Rica, which would have hosted the 2020 edition before it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be the second time that Costa Rica host a FIFA tournament after the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Japan are the defending champions. The opening match played at the tournament will be contested between Costa Rica and Australia at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica, San José. The final is due to be held on 28 August 2022.
