River Angles FC claim big victory in first Caf Women’s Champions League after beating Ghanaian champions Hasaacas Ladies 2-0 in Abidjan

Rivers Angles claim their first victory in the maiden Caf Women’s Champions League after leapfrogging Ghana Women’s Premier League champions Hasaacas Ladies at Stade Robert Champroux in Abidjan.

The Ghanaian side conceded in each half of the game as they suffer their first defeat of the maiden continental Women’s Championship. With each of Caf’s six zones beginning its Women’s Champions League today, the Wafu Zone B kicked started on Saturday evening with Rivers Angles from Nigeria facing Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies.

The zonal phase is used as qualifying round for the tournament proper later this year where 8 teams of ,six zonal champions together with a team from host country (Egypt) and Women’s league champions of last Afcon winning country (Algeria) will grace the maiden tournament in Egypt.

The Nigerian side enters into the competition as 2019 champions of the Nigerian Women Football League. The Port-Harcourt-based side won the last edition of the NWFL Premiership in three years ago since there was no competition for the 2019-20 season due to Coronavirus pandemic and they finished yet again on top at the end of NWFL Super Six Tournament put in place after the regular season was cut short.

On Hasaacas Ladies, they won the Ghana Women’s Premier League and Women’s FA Cup after beating rivals Ampem Darkoa 4-0 in the final league before recording a FA Cup final 2-0 win a week later.

The Ghanaian outfit started the game well but were unable to convert their chances, missing the posts by inches in first 10’ minutes.

Rivers Angles got the better of Hasaacas Ladies after Abiodun Deborah broke the deadlock on the 17th minute. That was a strong command from the Nigerians after enduring the threats of Hasaacas Ladies.

Having been matched after their opener, Rivers Angles got their second goal on 53’ minute with Ezenagu Maryann finding back of the next.

The score line doesn’t fully represent true reflection of the game if the Ghanaian side had been clinical enough result’s perception would be changed.
