PSL to support building women’s team ahead of new Caf directives for Caf Champions League |

New Caf directives can lead to disqualification from the Caf Champions League for all qualified Men’s team starting from next season.

No women’s team, no participation in the Confederation of African Football (Caf) club competitions in the 2022-2023 season. That is the directive from the continental football governing body which could constitute a crisis for 14 teams in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

TS Galaxy and Mamelodi Sundowns, the recently crowned inaugural Caf Women’s Champions League champions, are the only clubs with a women’s team in the elite league of SA soccer. Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe is now Caf president and is the power behind the push to further develop women’s football in Africa.

While the majority of PSL teams that have no women team will be affected by their chances in the African Champions League, the Premier Soccer League will discuss the directive at its next committee meeting in December.

It’s understood that PSL will urge its clubs to take bold step in forming women’s team and will assure them provision of financial, technical and technology assistance.

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates would be among PSL teams that will be largely affected due to their high chances of qualifying for African competitions. The two giants have put thing in place to establish their women’s team and the PSL support will facilitate the process.

While that would be good approach, Mamelodi Sundowns treble-winning captain Andile Dlamini has urged Chiefs and Pirates to join the Brazilians in showing their support for women’s football by establishing professional teams.

The Brazilians’ ladies have been pioneers in paving a way for women’s football to develop.

The results of the investment has paid dividends with the Sundowns female team being crowned the COSAFA Champions, Hollywoodbets Super League title and more recently the CAF Women’s Champions League title.

As a result, Downs Ladies’ Dlamini has now called on the country’s big teams as well as corporate South Africa to do their bit to ensure the growth of women’s football in the country.

“Sundowns is a big brand and when we win things, we open doors for women’s football and we also highlight to other big teams to say you also need to create a women’s side. It is very vital that we get these professional teams coming on board,” Dlamini told journalists at the Discovery Water Sisulu Soccer Challenge launch.

“Corporate South Africa coming on board to support women’s football because we cannot only rely on professional teams to create opportunities for women’s football. We have been doing great for women’s football in South Africa,” she added.
