Mbappe on Champions League elimination: This is the maximum we can do

Speaking to the media in the wake of Paris Saint-Germain’s latest Champions League last 16 defeat, Kylian Mbappé recognised that he and his teammates were not at the level required to turn the tie around against Bayern Munich.

His words reported by RMC, a resigned Mbappé called on the team to take a look at themselves and move on from the result, all the while explaining that the 2-0 loss was decided by the fine details. However, for the French international, who was shackled by his compatriot Dayot Upamecano throughout the game, the defeat shows that PSG are not in a position to take the next step on the European stage:

“They have a team that’s built to win the Champions League. At the start of the season, in the first Champions League press conference, I said we’d do the maximum we could. This is the maximum we can do.”

Mbappé then brushed off questions about his future, insisting that his sole focus for the time being was PSG’s title defence – the forward’s contract expires at the end of next season, and reports have indicated that the club has no intention of selling him this summer. Whether yet another insipid Champions League showing can change either party’s stance remains to be seen.
