Suarez: Uruguay ready to ‘fight until the end’ at the World Cup

Veteran striker Luis Suarez said Friday that Uruguay will be prepared to “fight until the end” as they bid for a third FIFA World Cup title in Qatar.

The 35-year-old faced the press before traveling with eight of his teammates to Abu Dhabi, where the Celeste will take part in a pre-World Cup training camp.

“With the mix that we have [of experience and youth], we think we can fight until the end,” Suarez said.

The former Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid star said he would enjoy this year’s World Cup more than the previous three in which he has participated.

“I’m going enjoy it as if it were the first because when it’s something new you are very nervous,” he said. “Now that I’m older, I can experience it differently.”

Suarez fine-tuned his preparations for the competition by scoring 14 goals in eight appearances for Montevideo club Nacional, whom he joined in late July.

Uruguay will begin their World Cup campaign against South Korea on November 24 before also meeting Portugal and Ghana in Group H.

Despite a population of only 3.5 million, Uruguay have often punched above their weight in football’s showpiece tournament. They were champions in 1930 and 1950, and have finished in the top 16 at each of the past three editions, including a semifinal appearance in South Africa 12 years ago.
