Benjamin Mendy found not guilty on six counts of rape, prosecutors seek retrial

BBC News and Manchester Evening News report this afternoon that Benjamin Mendy has been found not guilty of six counts of rape, alledgedly committed against four women, and one of sexual assault. Prosecutors have confirmed that they will seek a retrial, with one count of rape and one of sexual assault and one of attempted rape for which jurors were unable to come to a verdict.

The not guilty verdicts were unanimous. Mendy’s co-defendant, Louis Saha Matturie, has also been found not guilty of three counts of rape, alledgedly against two women.

The 28-year-old left-back has been on trial for the last six months at Chester Crown Court. He has been suspended by Manchester City since being initially charged with four counts of rape and remanded in custody in August 2021. His trial began this summer, and he was found not guilty of one charge of rape at the start of September.
