Champions League round 16 draw as PSG face Manchester United, Bayern against Atletico Madrid while European champions Chelsea take on Lille
The 2021-2022 Champions League round of 16 draw present two big games as Paris Saint-Germain face Manchester United while Bayern Munich take on Atletico Madrid earl next year.
The PSG-Manchester United fixture ensures Cristiano Ronaldo meet his historic rival Lionel Messi.
The draw for the last-16 of the European club competition took place on Monday 13th December at 11am GMT, from UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
European champions Chelsea will play against French Ligue 1 champions Lille LOSC with the first leg taking place at Stamford Bridge.
The competition’s most decorated side Real Madrid take on Portuguese side Benfica. Last season finalist Manchester City have been handed Villarreal while Liverpool face RB Salzburg.
City before the draw today could possibly make a trips to Spain, Portugal, Italy, or Austria in the new year with Pep Guardiola’s side travelling to Portugal after the draw.
Italian sides Juve and Inter have been handed tricky clashes as they face Sporting Lisbon and Ajax respectively. Ajax have won the Champions League four times and they step into their fifth title hopes with Sebastian Haller.
The Ivorian forward has scored 10 goals after six games making him the leading scorer of this season’s competition.
The 10 goals are notable for Haller, who became the first player in Champions League history to score in each of his first six matches. Haller has already matched the total achieved by last season’s top scorer, Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.
First-legs are scheduled to be played on February 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23rd, while second-legs are due to take place almost a month later, on March 8th, 9th, 15th and 16th.
Knock-out ties in the competition that end in a draw will no longer be dependent on away goals, after UEFA announced at the start of the season that they had decided to scrap the away goals rule.
