Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana will be sidelined for several weeks

Wesley Fofana is facing a number of weeks out after he limped out of Chelsea’s friendly against Brentford on Tuesday with a knee injury.

Fofana missed 11 Chelsea games before the World Cup due to a knee ligament injury suffered in October but scans revealed he has avoided another significant injury though one that will still delay his return to competitive action.

Fofana was hopeful of making his comeback against Bournemouth next Tuesday but will now see his comeback pushed back until next month.

The 22-year-old signed from Leicester City back in the summer in a deal worth an initial £70million plus £5m in add-ons.

He was only able to make six appearances for the Blues before suffering the knee injury.

Fofana moved to reassure fans his latest injury setback wasn’t a severe one in an Instagram comment on Wednesday.

He wrote: ‘Nothing bad champion in not even 1 month we’re back to break everything.’

Chelsea face a hectic January schedule with Premier League games against Manchester City, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Liverpool, as well as an away FA Cup tie against City.

Meanwhile, Armando Broja had ‘successful’ surgery on his ruptured ACL on Wednesday.

The striker suffered the season-ending setback in Chelsea’s winter friendly against Aston Villa with a more precise timescale for his recovery to become clearer in the coming days based on how he responds to the operation.

Chelsea have also confirmed the appointment of Christopher Vivell as their new technical director.
