Ashley Cole made big revelation about why he quit Arsenal for Chelsea

Former England International Ashley Cole has revealed why he quit Arsenal for London rivals Chelsea in 2006.

The left-back caused one of the most talked-about transfer sagas in the last two decades after switching camp from Emirates Stadium to Stamford Bridge in beginning of Jose Mourinho’s era in English football.

There have been so many concerns about why the 107-capped England former left-back quit Arsenal for Chelsea where money has been usually associated with Cole’s decision to transfer from the Gunners.

However, the 39-year old has made a revelation about his move to Chelsea highlighting what caused it all to join the Blues.

“The transition in terms of being in a different group, environment and players was easy because, at the time when I first started at Arsenal, we had a core – the Keowns, the Seamans, the Vieiras, the Henrys, the Adams’,” Cole told BBC Sport.

“When they started to leave, I felt there were holes in the culture of what it was that brought success. I just felt it was falling apart a bit, or there were gaps missing, and they weren’t filled.

“So that transition in terms of finding myself in a different culture and the willingness and want to win, I went to Chelsea, and I had that.”

Cole is one of the players who broke out of Arsenal youth system in 1999 before he was loaned out to Crystal Palace following season.

He became a regular member under Asene Wenger since 2001 and reached the Champions League finals with the Gunners in 2006.

Cole after joining then Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea was given the number 3 shirt, and made his first appearance for the club as a substitute for Wayne Bridge in their 2–1 win over Charlton Athletic on 9 September.

He issued a public statement concerning his transfer saying he “forgave” Arsenal for how he felt he was treated during his time in North London.

He won 9 titles with Chelsea including the Champions League against Bayern Munich in 2012 before leaving Stamford Bridge two years later after the Champions League final.
