Goretzka, Havertz and Gundogan strikes against Iceland open a strong start for Die Mannschaft in World Cup qualifiers

Germany’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Iceland on Thursday evening opens a strong start for Joachim Low’s side at the MSV-Arena, one of the best performances from Germany since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

The German boss has announced that he will step down after Euro 2020 as a new generation of players come through the ranks. But the German coach of 15 years is still in charge for the time being and wanted a dramatic improvement on his side’s 6-0 loss to Spain last time out.

And Low convincing performance from his men, thanks to first half goals from Leon Goretzka and Kai Havertz and ilKay Gundogan in the second half the got the job done as Germany pick first three points in European World Cup qualifiers.

Low decide to start the night with a 4-3-3 formation with Klostermann, Ginter, Rudiger, Emry Can completing the backline as Neuer kept the posts.

Bayer Munich duo Goretzka and Kimmich were joined by Manchester City ace Gundogan in midfield whiles Havertz, Gnabry and Sane led the three-man line.

Relentless Germany were on track with the formation as Goretzka open the score on the 2’ minute when he struck from inside the box to the bottom corner.

Joachim Low knew very well of the defensive awareness of his opponents and unsettle them with that early goal. Germany doubled their lead after five minutes when Kai Havertz struck into the net from Leroy Sane’s slide pass.

The home side came forward in search of the third goal and missed a couple of decent chances which they should have score to extend the lead but lack of cutting-edge saw the first half ended 2-0.

Iceland started the second half a bid of a stronger side but they were out-beaten by the Germans as City midfielder Gundogan added the third goal. Few minutes later, Havertz struck with his second goal of the night but the effort was ruled offside.

Germany take the top spot of group J as Romania, North Macedonia, Armenia and Lichtenstein are the other teams in this group with first place qualifying automatically and second entering a four-team play-off tournament.
