Uruguay are facing major sanctions after their irate players lost control following the country’s World Cup exit on goals scored last month.

Despite Uruguay beating Ghana 2-0, it was not enough for them to qualify for the last-16, sending several players into a fury over decisions made during the game, as they chased officials down the tunnel.

The players were adamant that they should have been awarded a penalty, which triggered unpleasant scenes at full-time, with Jose Gimenez appearing to elbow FIFA’s competitions director in the back of the head, before calling the referees ‘thieves’ and ‘sons of b***hes’.

And now according to Marca, the Atletico Madrid defender has been hit with a four-match ban, football community service and a fine of £17,500.

Fortunately for the Spanish giants, it’s understood his ban will not cross over to La Liga.

Jimenez was not the only player involved – in fact the Uruguayan FA will have to play their next home fixture with a reduced capacity, while they were also hit with a £43,800 fine.

Former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani also picked up a one-match suspension – as did Diego Godin – for their respective roles in the unpleasant scenes which unfolded.

Cavani unleashed his anger by punching the VAR monitor as he walked past it on his way to the dressing room with his defeated team-mates.

Veteran Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera – who could be seen aggressively hounding officials – joins Gimenez in facing a four-match ban for his involvement.

The suspensions, which will be fulfilled in the next official Uruguay matches, were handed out by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

Uruguay’s players continued to vent their frustration in the weeks after the World Cup with Cavani claiming the referee should be ‘put in jail’.
