Aubameyang penalty dent Libya hopes for 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar as Egypt comfortably lead Group F

Gabon national team have achieved a difficult 1-0 victory over Libya to keep their chances of qualification to the FIFA World Cup alive.

In the fifth round fixture of the FIFA World Cup qualifications’ Group stage, Gabon hosted Libya in a crucial game in both teams’ journeys.

Both hosts and visitors went into the game with winning intentions to keep chasing Group F leaders, Egypt.

Before the round started, Egypt sat on top of the group with ten points, followed by Libya who had six points, then Gabon with four points, and Angola came last with three points.

As only first place advances to the next stage, both hosts and visitors went into the game with winning intentions to keep their World Cup chances alive.

The first half of the game saw no scoring as both teams carefully waited for a chance to snatch the anticipated goal.

After the half-time break, the chance availed itself to Gabon when they were awarded a penalty kick that was successfully executed in the 54th minute by Arsenal and Gabon national team captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who put his team ahead.

As the game ended with that result (1-0), Libya is now out of the qualification race before the last round fixture, while Gabon’s chances are still alive despite remaining slim.

The result is in favor of the Egyptian national team who only need one point in their two games left against Angola and Gabon.
