Handball: Al Ahly fall to defeat against Magdeburg in Super Globe
Al Ahly’s handball team have suffered a defeat against Germany’s Magdeburg in the IHF Super Globe semi-finals on Saturday.
The Red Devils were handed a tough group as they were drawn alongside EHF European League winners SL Benfica and hosts Mudhar of Saudi Arabia.
A convincing 36-30 victory over Mudhar marked a good start for Al Ahly in the tournament before they faced Portuguese giants Benfica.
However, it was Al Ahly who came out victorious against Benfica as they earned a historic 29-28 win in the final moments of the game.
The win meant that Al Ahly advanced to the semi-finals to face defending champions Magdeburg as Barcelona took on Poland’s Lomza Kielce.
Despite Al Ahly going into the break just a goal behind with 17-18, Magdeburg extended their lead in the second half to win the encounter 36-28.
The Germans will now face Barcelona in the final while Al Ahly take on Lomza Kielce to determine the third place in the competition.
