How Al Ahly stun Benfica to reach Super Globe semi-finals

Al Ahly have stunned EHF European League winners SL Benfica to reach the semi-finals of the 2022 IHF Men’s Super Globe.

Al Ahly take part in the 2022 IHF Super Globe as Egypt’s sole representative after clinching the African Super Cup over arch-rivals Zamalek.

The Reds were handed a tough group B alongside EHF European League winners SL Benfica and hosts Mudhar of Saudi Arabia.

Only the winner of the group will reach the semi-finals, while the runner-ups will take part in the 5-8th playoffs, and the bottom team in the 9-12th playoffs.

The Reds started their campaign strong with a 36-30 victory over the Saudi Arabians before Benfica thrashed the latter with a scoreline of 39-27.

This meant Al Ahly must the Portuguese giants if they want to advance to the semi-finals as a draw would benefit their opponents who had a better goal difference.

Benfica were ahead for the majority of the first-half, before Al Ahly took the lead for the first time in the 26th minute, going up 12-11.

However, Benfica were the ones to come out victorious ahead of the break, 13-12, after Al Ahly missed a free throw in the dying moments.

The second-half was very tight with a two-goal lead for Benfica being the biggest scoreline difference between both teams before Al Ahly took the lead in the latter stages of the game.

With just 12 seconds left on the clock, Al Ahly managed to go up 29-28 with a man down, this led to Benfica having the final chance of the game, which saw Abdelrahman Taha deny Petar Đorđić in the final second to grant Al Ahly a historic win.

Al Ahly will now face the winner between title holders SC Magdeburg and Saudi Arabia’s Khaleej in the semi-finals.

The Reds had once managed to finish as runner-ups in the World championship back in 2007, before finishing fifth in 2015.
