Zamalek not ready for league resumption according to president Mortada Mansour

Zamalek president Mortada Mansour has reiterated that the 2019/2020 season of the Egyptian Premier League will not be restarted challenging the decision made by Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi.

The minister had on Monday announced that clubs will be allowed to return to training on June 20 and that all sporting activities will resume on July 25.

He added that it was the Ministry’s view that that the league should resume rather than cancel it. Football activities in Egypt have been suspended since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision to restart the leagues has not gone down well with Mansour who heavily criticised the minister.

“I am very surprised with what the Minister said, with all due respect. We are not like sheep. Football decisions concern the president of football clubs, the decision is ours and not the government’s,” Mansour told Zamalek TV.

“If the decisions came from the government then this is government intervention which we refuse. If the Minister of Sports wants to hand Al Ahly the title he should publicly declare that because they haven’t won any trophy this season.”

“The Egyptian Premier League won’t return. 14 clubs are against the restart, we won’t play because of one or two teams. I have no problem with crowning Al Ahly as champions if the rules say so.”
