Manchester United captain Harry Maguire allegedly arrested in Mykonos after ‘fight outside bar’

Manchester United say they are aware of reports Harry Maguire was arrested during a post-season holiday in Mykonos.

The 27-year-old was allegedly detained after an altercation with a number of other holiday-goers and police officers outside a bar in the early hours of Friday morning.

United have said they have made contact with their skipper, who is ‘fully co-operating with authorities’.

“The club is aware of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos last night,” read a United statement.

“Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully co-operating with the Greek authorities.

“At this time we will be making no further comment.”

The 27-year-old centre-back is currently on holiday on the Greek island with partner Fern Hawkins, with United players taking a period of time off after their Europa League exertions earlier this month, before returning for pre-season.

But, according to reports in the local media, Maguire’s post-season break took a turn for the worse on Thursday night when he got involved in a row with a group of other British tourists.

The England international was said to have been spotted by police during an altercation outside a bar, and then resisted arrest when officers stepped in.

It is claimed he was then led away from the scene in handcuffs, with the other Brits also taken to a local police station.

Hours before, a video was posted in the local Greek media of Maguire hanging out at a bar with friends, and posing for a selfie with a fan.

However, it’s unclear if this was the same bar the alleged incident took place in, or even if it was taken from the same evening.

Greek police released a statement later on Friday which detailed the alleged incident.

It read: “Three foreigners, aged 27, 28 and 29, were arrested today (August 21, 2020) in Mykonos by police officers of the Mykonos police department.

“Patrolling police officers in the area of ??Mykonos intervened and normalised a dispute between citizens, however, three foreigners involved in the incident turned against them, insulting and hitting a police officer with fists.

“The three foreigners were taken to the Mykonos Police Station, where upon their arrival they strongly resisted, pushing and beating three police officers.

“One of the detainees then tried to offer money so that the trial against them would not be completed. The arrested (men) were taken to the Syros Prosecutor’s Office.”

Maguire became the world’s most expensive defender when he left Leicester to join Manchester United last summer in an £80million deal, becoming the club’s captain the following January following Ashley Young’s departure to Inter Milan.

He played every single minute of the Red Devils’ Premier League campaign as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side sneaked into the top-four thanks to their brilliant end to the season.

Maguire actually played more minutes than any other footballer in the world during an exhausting 2019/20 season – making 55 appearances and playing 5,509 minutes of football.
