Maritzburg United manager Eric Tinkler defends Richard Ofori amid recent mistake

Eric Tinkler has defended Maritzburg United goalkeeper Richard Ofori after recent mistakes as it remains unclear whether or not the Ghanaian will play against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Ghanaian shot-stopper did not have the best of games in their 3-2 defeat to relegation-threatened Black Leopards last Saturday, but Tinkler came to his defence.

Ofori insisted on playing despite losing his mother a day before the game.

“It was always going to be difficult to play, obviously we are all aware that he lost his mother,” Tinkler explained after the match at FNB Stadium.

“We obviously sat him down and asked him how he felt and he wanted to play. He felt it was important to honour the memory or his late mother.

“All players are human, he made mistakes. Whether that has anything to do with the fact that he lost his mother, I don’t think so. He is human and bound to make mistakes and it happens.

“You know the qualities that he has and the quality that he presents.”

The Team of Choice take on Mamelodi Sundowns at Lucas Moripe Stadium at 18h00 today but it remains unclear if Ofori will feature.

As of earlier this week Ofori had not yet gone home to meet his family regarding his mother’s funeral.

Meanwhile, the club has announced a new signing in Gabon-born striker Nathanael Mbourou while Mxolisi Kunene has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
