Ghana FA Cup champions Dreams FC complete signing of former Al Ahly striker John Antwi

Ghana FA Cup champions Dreams FC have completed the signing of former Al Ahly forward John Antwi heading into 2023-2024 season. Dreams FC won the FA Cup after beating King Faisal 2-0 in final at Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports complex last season.

Dreams will represent Ghana in the CAF Confederation Cup where they take on Guinean side Milo FC in the Prelims of the competition. Last season, Milo finished third on the Guinean league table behind leaders Hafia and second place Horoya.

Dreams will begin 2023-2024 footballing season with CAF Confederation Cup away clash against Milo on 19th August before hosting the Guinean side in the return leg on 25th August.

Dreams will thereon face Premier League champions Medeama SC in Ghana Super League final 3rd September before beginning their Ghana Premier League campaign with a home game against new comers Nations FC.

With their squad strengthening exercise, Dreams FC have bolstered their squad with the signing of experienced forward John Antwi a head of the new season.

The former Al Ahly striker joins the FA Cup champions after ending his stay with Jordanian club Al Faisaly. Antwi is expected to play a pivotal role at the club as they prepare for continental and domestic fixtures.

The former Eleven Wise attacker has rich experience playing on the African continent after spells in the Egyptian Premier League with Al Ahly and Pyramids FC.

The Egyptian side have won the CAF Champions League 11 times and one CAF Confederation Cup title  and will represent Africa in their 9th FIFA Club World Cup appearance in the 2023 edition in December in Saudi Arabia having beaten Wydad Casablanca in this season’s African Champions League final.

In 2017, Antwi spoke about his day at Al Ahly stating he did not get more chances to prove his worth at the Cairo side.

John Antwi, who joined Al Ahly from Saudi Arabian side Al Shabab in the 2015 summer transfer window, was loaned back to Makkasa from Al Ahly after failing to impress at the Cairo giants.

The Red Devils’ unbeaten run in the league in 2017 ended following 2-3 defeat Misr El-Makkasa in a match that Antwi took part in and scored his team’s third goal.

“I needed enough space and a proper chance to be able to perform well. I was not given that during my time at Al Ahly,” the striker told ON Sport TV channel. “I can not talk about where I will go after the end of the season and choosing between Al Ahly and Makkasa, I am only focused on playing for Makkasa right now.”

It is worth mentioning that Makkasa chairman Mohamed Abdel-Salam assured that his club aims to activate their option to buy then 25-year-old player making the loan move permanent.

“Antwi’s contract is a loan contract with an option to buy and we are going to activate this option,” he confirmed in radio comments.

The club also showed interest before in signing Al Ahly’s veteran striker Emad Meteb, a deal that Antwi welcomed by saying: “Emad Meteb is a great striker with a lot of expertise, surely having him with us in Makkasa will be a good addition to the team.”

John Antwi completed the 2017 season as the third Egyptian Premier League top scorer with 11 goals firing his side Misr El-Makkasa into second place finish. Antwi’s teammate Ahmed El Sheikh won the league’s top scorer with 17 goals.
