South African outlet FARPost reported this week that Kaizer Chiefs were pursuing Marumo Gallants forward Ranga Chivaviro ahead of a strong campaign next season.

The 30-year old has attracted huge interest from the likes Al Akhdar Sporting Club, Orlando Pirates, Young Africans, Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City. As clubs prepare for summer transfer activity, Al Akhdar made a move to lure Ranga Chivaviro to the Libyan Premier League.

However, the deal has failed after the forward rejecting a huge offer worth around US$150 000 (almost R3 million) amid Kaizer Chiefs interest. It’s understood Ranga Chivaviro will want to remain in the Premier Soccer League and preferably play for Kaizer Chiefs next season.

However, the Soweto giants are not the only suitors eager to lure him. A latest offer he turned down would give Chiefs a picture of his expectations.

Libya’s Al Akhdar SC tabled a one-year offer with an option of another year. The Badya-based club know Chivaviro too well after facing him twice in the CAF Confederation Cup.

In February 2023, he scored twice as they beat them 4-1 at the Dobsonville Stadium in the Group Stage of the CAF inter-club competition.

The Limpopo side lost the reverse fixture on a similar scoreline in March.

Al Akhdar would have given the player an advanced payment in the region of R1 million, with the other R2 million spread out throughout the contract’s duration.

“They were interested in Chivaviro, but he turned down their off. They didn’t agree on the numbers,” said a source close to Kaizer Chiefs.

With Caleb Bimenyimana set to leave, Chiefs are looking for a replacement for the Burundian.

Chivaviro has emerged as a target, while Young Africans’ Fiston Mayele is deemed “too expensive”.

Mayele would cost Chiefs nothing less than R12 million, as he still has a running contract with Yanga.

It leaves Chivaviro as the only realistic target at this point. The man nicknamed ‘Ranga Tanga’ registered 17 goals in all competitions this season. His 10 goals in the DStv Premiership could not help save Marumo. His seven goals in the CAF Confederation Cup took them as far as the semi-final.

They were knocked out by Yanga, who are reportedly keen on his signature should they lose Mayele.

Chivaviro scored 10 goals in 19 matches for Marumo Gallants. Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs failed to qualify for African football after placing 5th position in the Dstv Premiership table.
