Al Ahly edge up in Egyptian Premier League table after putting five past Zamalek in Eight-goal thriller in Cairo

Al Ahly achieved a massive 5-3 victory over arch-rivals Zamalek in the third-round fixture of the Egyptian Premier League.

Both Zamalek and Al Ahly had a strong start for the Egyptian Premier League season as they collected six points in their first two encounters.

The two teams went into the game with winning intentions as each club had their eyes set on topping the league table.

The game started with both teams searching for a lead, but the Reds had the upper hand as they successfully snatched the early goal through Aliou Dieng whose shot the woodwork before touching Zamalek goalkeeper Abou Gabal to change its direction into the nets.

Only four minutes later, Mosimane’s men added a second goal from the penalty spot after Hamza Mathlouthi’s violent tackle on his countryman Ali Maaloul, who successfully executed the penalty kick.

The Red Devils didn’t stop there as they added a third goal before the halftime break when Mohamed Sherif sent Amr El-Sulya’s breathtaking assist to the Whites’ nets.

After the halftime break, Carteron’s men started looking for their first goal of the night and they successfully found it when Mostafa Fathi netted a screamer in the 51st minute of the match.

However, Zamalek celebrations didn’t last long as Dieng added another red goal only two minutes later through a long-distance shot that found its way to Abou Gabal’s nets.

Around ten minutes later, another goal was added to the scoreboard when Al Ahly’s Amr El-Sulya won his team another penalty kick after another violent tackle from Mathlouthi. The execution wasn’t successful but Sherif put the ball into the nets. However, the referee decided the penalty kick will be taken again after Al Ahly players entered the penalty area before execution.

Maaloul’s execution was successful the second time as he scored his second goal of the night and the fifth for his team.

Despite Al Ahly’s massive lead, Zamalek players made their attempts to narrow the gap and in the 80th minute they scored their second goal after Jaziri won the Whites a penalty kick that was successfully executed by Ahmed Sayed Zizo.

Ten minutes later and just before the injury time Achraf Bencharki narrowed the gap further for the title-holders but his goal wasn’t enough for Zamalek to get out of the game with a point.

After the game, Al Ahly rose on top of the Egyptian Premier League table with nine points while Zamalek lie fifth with six points after three games.
