Ashanti Gold’s Fredrick Acheampong assigned to lead Black Meteors delegation ahead of Africa U-23 Nations Cup
The Chief Executive Officer for Ghana Premier League giants Ashanti Gold has been appointed by the newly elect Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association to lead the delegation who will steer the affairs for the Black Meteors of Ghana as Meteors enter into the 2019 U-23 AFCON in Egypt.
It has been 15 years when the national U-23 side of Ghana last qualified for the Olympic Games as virtually, all previous attempts to qualify for the competition within the 15-year period have ended in disappointments of the Meteors.
This year has been pretty good for Ibrahim Tanko’s side as they enjoyed a stunning campaign during the qualifying stages of the 2019 U-23 championship, eliminating Togo, Gabon and Algeria to book a place in Egypt.
As the playing body have already began preparations, the new administration of GFA have named a delegation, with Fredrick Acheampong being the leader of the delegation, to take charge in the daily activities of Tanko’s side.
Acheampong’s first task has arrived few weeks after being elected into the Executive Council of the FA.
The Ash Gold C.E.O can draw on his experiences gained from the Miners’ recent campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup despite reaching the first round of the Confederation Cup.
The appointment of the delegation ahead of the championship can delight Ibrahim Tanko but he cannot be extremely happy with some of his key players missing the upcoming tournament.
Ropapa failed to honor Tanko’s call up due to injury that would sideline the Ghana forward from the African U-23 Nations Cup.
Tanko after Meteors first training in Egypt explained Ropapa missed, and expressed his delight over the release of Abass Issah who replaced the Nashville SC forward.
“We were expecting Ropapa to join the squad but we were advised by his club side that he had suffered an injury which would require that he sits out for some time before he can return to full action, thus we had to replace him in the squad,’ Tanko said after the team’s first training session in Cairo.
“We are glad that Utrecht finally accepted to release Abass for the tournament ,” he added.
Ghana will open their group A account of the competition against Cameroon tomorrow at Cairo International Stadium before they play hosts Egypt and Mali in the group stage. The first three teams will represent Africa in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
