Zamalek and Al Ahly CAF Champions League semifinals second leg will be played in the Cairo International Stadium despite stadium renovation

The Cairo International Stadium was initially scheduled to undergo renovations exercise between April and mid May, 2020.

But with Ahly and Zamalek’s Champions League semifinals game taking place on early May means the Stadium would be incapable to handle those two return leg games.

Ahly and Zamalek make away visits to Morocco to face Wydad Athletic Club and Raja Casablanca on 1st May respectively before they return to host their opponents a week later 8th May in Egypt.

The renovation exercise meant these games would have to be played out the Cairo International Stadium where by that time renovation of the pitch would still be in progress.

However, Egypt’s minister of youth and sports Ashraf Sobhy in consultation with Cairo Stadium’s board of directors have decided to push the initial renovation date forward which means the renovation commences early next month.

This will affect the initially agreed completion date of 15th May to an earlier date of in between 5-8th May in order to host Zamalek and Ahly’s CAF Champions League semifinals second leg games.

Zamalek eliminated defending champions Esperance de Tunis in the quarter finals whilst a 1-1 away draw against Mamelodi Sundowns saw Ahly through to the semis after winning the first leg in Cairo 2-0.
