Richard Mpong reveals the pain and sorrow fans incur on him during his stays Asante Kotoko
Former Asante Kotoko winger Richard Mpong has revealed the pain and sorrow supporters of the Ghanaian giants put him through during his stay at Kumasi.
Mpong spent four seasons at Kotoko after arriving from Medeama in July 2012 and won two Ghana Premier League and two FA Cup titles with his new side before leaving for Aduana Stars in 2017.
He put up impressive displays to eventually walk into the heart of Kotoko supporters but has revealed the sorrow and pains he went through after fans later tarnished his image over leading gang allegation.
“I loved Kotoko. I had passion for the club. My entire family is a Kotoko family so I really wanted to play for them even while I was playing for Medeama,” Mpong revealed in an interview with Footballmadeinghana.com.
‘They gave me a bad name, tarnished my image before I left the club and never gave me the opportunity to explain myself. I joined the club with blistering happiness but left with pain and sorrow.”
“I was branded the leader of a gang that wanted David Duncan to fail to the extent that a notorious fan of the club who was noted for his close relationship with leadership, Seidu MBA was on radio claiming I took losing bonus from Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong (The then club’s Chairman) to share for the players.
The former Porcupine Warriors winger won the league title with Kotoko on two successive occasions in the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons.
He made his debut for the Black Stars of Ghana in 2012 in a friendly against Chile at the PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, United States.
Mpong came on in the 18th Minute as a substitute and scored against Chile after receiving a pass from Sulley Muntari.
